How to properly use White Lightning lube:
- Start with a very clean chain. White Lightning doesn’t work nearly as well when it is applied to a dirty chain or a chain that has another type of lube already on it.
- Shake the bottle before vigorously until it is mixed completely.
- Shift the chain to the smallest cog in back, and the largest cog in front.
- Pedal the chain backwards while applying a steady stream of lube where the chain travels over the rear cog.
- Try to avoid getting lube on anything but the chain. Do not apply lube to gears, cogs, derailleurs, pivot points, or cables.
- Apply the lube until the chain is almost saturated. If you see lube dripping or splattering off of the chain, stop.
- Take a rag or paper towel and wipe off the chain while pedaling backwards. Continue to do this until the chain is clean and all of the excess lube has been removed.
- Wipe off any excess lube and dirt that has accumulated on the rear derailleur pulleys or front or rear gears.
- Lube your chain at least every other ride or so. Drier, dusty conditions might necessitate more frequent application. If your chain feels dry or makes noises while pedaling, it needs to be lubed.

Properly Lubricating and Cleaning Your Suspension Fork

If you’re not regularly lubing and cleaning the inner legs of your suspension fork, you are doing permanent damage to the seals, bushings, and inner legs. This will eventually kill your fork! Before every ride you should wipe all dirt and mud off of your inner legs. Mud and dirt particles act like sandpaper that slowly eat your fork. After cleaning the inner legs, you should apply a thin coat of suspension-specific grease. Using normal bicycle grease or lube will gum up your fork and make it perform poorly. After applying the grease, compress the fork several times to work the grease in. Wipe off any excess grease.
On all of the bikes here at the shop and on our personal bikes, we use a brand called Slick Honey. Slick Honey is specifically formulated for suspension forks. Other greases are made for high temperature applications or high pressures like bearings, and they are usually too thick. This lube is designed specifically for suspension forks, specifically the bushing/stanchion interface. It really does make a noticeable decrease in the stiction (stickiness) of your fork and amazingly enough, it will not wash away in oil bath design forks. We always have Slick Honey in stock. Pick some up the next time you’re in, and you’ll immediately notice a difference in the performance of your fork.
